Doesn’t get any cuter

Baby pika

Baby pika at Lake O’Hara (Photo by Charlotte Dibb)

You can tell that this is a young pika by it’s smooth and babyish looking fur, compared to the rougher looking coats of the adults. It is also about half the size of a fully grown pika, which is pretty small when you think that adults are only 7 inches (18 cm) long and about 3 inches (8 cm) high.

Brian Keating talks about pikas in the Purcell Mountains and Parks Canada’s study on these little critters. Listen to CBC’s Homestretch of August 13, 2012. You can also watch this video to hear the Pika’s call.

Stayed at Moraine Lake for a few days this week and saw several of these cuties bounding around in the rocks. They were gathering leaves. ~
