Welcome to the Columbia Valley
Nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the east and the Purcells to the west, the Columbia Valley lies like a sparkling jewel in the south-east corner of the province of British Columbia. Stretching from Invermere, Radium Hot Springs, Fairmont Hot Springs and Canal Flats in the south to Golden in the north, the Columbia Valley follows the meandering upper Columbia River from its headwaters in Columbia Lake.
Early in the nineteenth century, even before its discovery by Europeans, the Columbia Valley was home to the Ktunaxa, who hunted in its forests and fished its rivers.
Today the valley has become a permanent or a part-time home and playground for thousands and a second-to-none destination for vacationers from all over the world. With its beautiful lakes, its magnificent mountain views, hot springs, championship golf courses, ski resorts, unique shops, cultural festivals and much more, the Columbia Valley has something to offer everyone.
Come in winter and downhill ski or snowboard on some of the best hills in the country or cross-country ski along the many forested trails. After a day on the slopes, you can soak to your heart’s content in one of the famed hot pools. Try ice fishing, skating on the lakes, curling in the Bonspiel on the Lake -– these are some of the many activities to fill your winter vacation with fun.
In the summer months, the Columbia Valley offers several world-class golf courses amid some of the most breath-taking scenery in the world. You can put your boat in the crystal clear waters of Lake Windermere or paddle a canoe or kayak in the wetlands where hundreds of bird species make their homes. Perhaps white-water rafting is your passion –- or hiking, fishing, boating, visiting art galleries, or fine dining. Don’t forget to bring your camera though, because the valley is a photographer’s paradise!
Who knows — you just might decide to stay!
