History

Strand’s overlooks the business section of Invermere and offers a commanding view of the Rocky Mountains. Today, as yesterday, Strand’s is an integral part of Valley history. It was built in 1912 as the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Ritchie. At that time Mr. Richie owned the Livery Stable in Invermere and did heavy hauling with his team and wagon. He later became a prominent Valley rancher.

The home was purchased by Dr. and Mrs. Filmer Coy around 1920. “Doc” Coy, as he was affectionately known, was for many years the only medical practitioner between Cranbrook and Golden. He set aside one room of his home for use as his consulting-study and many of his patients were examined and treated there. Dr. and Mrs. Coy were very influential and highly respected Valley citizens. Dr. Coy attained high military office during the Second World War.

The Ian Weir family purchased the home about 1946 and three generations of Weirs enjoyed its beauty and comfort. In 1979, the home was purchased by Tim Strand and he opened Strand’s Old House Restaurant in June 1980 with Chef Tony Wood. Renovations and furnishings reflect the historical integrity of the home and, in line with its rich heritage, Tim Strand named the dining areas the Ritchie, Coy and Weir Rooms, and a fourth dining room Harrington named after the maiden name of Tim’s mother.

Executive chef Tony Wood originally hails from New Zealand and has been an integral part of Strands since its inception. In 1992, Tony expanded on his partnership role and became the sole proprietor of Strands.

Strands varied and innovative menu is designed to delight the palates of all diners. Tony and his kitchen staff use only the finest and freshest ingredients to prepare your dishes, which often feature a flair stemming from their world-wide travels. Whatever your choice, Strands kitchen prepares it with expertise and special attention to precise and attractive presentation.

No matter what time of year, whether enjoying a crisp martini al fresco on the patio or in the gazebo after a round of golf – or dining around the fireplace apres-ski, Strand’s is sure to offer you a pleasant, casual evening of fine food served in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

Visiting Strands was the most amazing experience. Not only the beautiful scenery, but the wonderful hospitality of a small town, and the smell of WONDERFUL as you walked up to the front door.

I started with a great glass of wine, and the amazing homemade rolls, with butter....a delight.

The Butternut Squash soup, was as close to consuming velvet as one could come.....truly a work of art.

Vodka Butter Prawns.....yes, they were ALL THAT ! I do have to admit, slightly over cooked, however it was quite busy ( Saturday Night at 730 pm ), however edible, and enjoyable ! The free flowing wine, likely helped with putting them down ! : )

Chicken Oscar......was speechless, truly ! Out of this world, simply, one of the best put together entrees I have ever had. So creamy, smooth, buttery, and wonderful. It could have only been made better, by adding a side of the Crab Legs !

A memory and meal that I will not soon forget, looking forward to coming again, and again.

A must taste, for all !

We celebrated our 35th Wedding Anniversary at Strands. The service was great. We love the setting. Our meals were very enjoyable. The above and beyond gift of Specialty coffee's served on a platter with Happy Anniversary and chocolate hearts was very special and very much appreciated. We have been going to Strands for three decades and look forward to our next opportunity. Bless you for basing your business on quality and service! ~
