Bruce Kirkby keynote speaker at Wings gala

The Wings Over the Rockies festival’s gala evening on Saturday, May 12th promises a delicious meal at Radium Resort, a raucous live and silent auction and an entertaining keynote address by Bruce Kirkby, Kimberley resident, naturalist, adventurer and travel writer for the Globe and Mail.
Bruce will present ‘Wild Journeys and Wild Places’ — pictures and stories “to celebrate the beauty of our wild planet” in both the Rockies and exotic locales abroad.

Flight cage grand opening celebration
May 12, Invermere –
The 2012 Wings Over the Rockies festival will include a celebration of the grand opening of a new flight cage for the rehabilitation of injured raptors on Saturday, May 12 with an open house from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and a reception and presentation at 2:00pm.
Tossing tethered raptors into the air for rehabilitation flights, which was how it used to be done, was an arduous process and potentially harmful to the birds. Calling all birds…
Finally it’s spring again, and these turkeys are certainly raving about it. But they are not the only ones to do so. The valley is home to a gazillion species, many of whom will soon arrive to hang out with the locals. Wings Over the Rockies is an annual celebration of the return of our bird friends. Wings Over the Rockies 2012 registration begins April 9
The 16th Annual Wings Over the Rockies festival is coming May 7 to 13, 2012. Festival organizers are urging those who wish to take part in the nearly 70 high-quality events planned, to register early to ensure you are not disappointed, as there are limits to the number of participants in each event.
The theme of this year’s week-long festival which celebrates the return of migrating birds to the Columbia Valley is “Our Backyard — The Envy of the World”.
