The Columbia Wetlands is one of the largest wetland and river systems in the world. Located in the East Kootenay portion of British Columbia, the system stretches 180 kilometres from Invermere to Golden along the upper Columbia River. It was recognized by the United Nations as a ‘Wetlands of International Importance’ and on June 5, 2008, was designated as Canada’s 36th RAMSAR site.
The land is owned by federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as private individuals. Provincially-owned lands are managed as the Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area while the four federally-owned portions are managed as national wildlife areas.
