Invermere Light Up Celebration
Nov 19, 2016 2:30 pm - 8:00 pm| Free
The holiday season kick-off in Invermere is a huge explosion of fun and good cheer for everyone – it’s called Light Up! And it’s a much anticipated tradition every year as the days grow shorter and the nights colder. This year the Light Up theme is “A Traditional Mountain Christmas” and you just may see store owners dressed in the garb of yesteryear.
The shop windows in downtown Invermere are festooned with evergreen boughs in anticipation of the season and already, merchants are seeing the shoppers checking off their gift lists. Excitement hangs in the air.
From 2:30 to 4:30 PM on Light Up afternoon, Santa, that jolly fellow with the warm heart and a special place on his knee, will be popping in to Santa’s Den at the Best Western Invermere Inn. He will be busy, busy, busy with the younger generation lining up for a photo op with him.
Promptly at 5 pm, Santa Claus officially comes to town in the Santa Claus Parade, with his sleigh and his eight tiny reindeer – oops, make that nine! Forgot Rudolph! The parade sparkles every year with brightly-colored floats and lively music, bringing smiles to every face along the parade route. There is a kids’ coloring contest every year for school children from Edgewater to Canal Flats, with the winner getting to ride in the parade and be an honorary parade judge. Great prize!
After the parade, you can join your voice with that of everyone else in the singing of ‘Carols by Candlelight.’ Then, finally, what everyone has been waiting for – Light Up! The mayor flips a switch, the special Light Up tree in Cenotaph Park bursts into thousands of sparkling lights and all the decorations on the downtown lamp posts come to life, heralding the official start of the holiday season.
Starting at 3 PM, there will be fires to warm up by, hot chocolate and smores plus lots of festivities downtown. There will also be shopping and dining specials all day long and shoppers will be able to get a head start on their gift lists by taking advantage of the many in-store specials offered by local retail businesses.
This year’s proposed schedule is as follows:
- 2:30-4:30 pm – Pictures with Santa
- 5:00 pm – Santa Claus Parade
- 6:00 pm – Tree lighting at Cenotaph Park (following the parade)
